The game was released on (11 x 3.5) disks and CD-Rom close to Xmas (December 17, 1993). The CD-Rom version includes voice-overs for all characters and narrator. As a bonus it includes a 20 minutes behind the scenes avi (in a rather very poor quality). The game also includes a graphic novel with the back story.

It was released in a origami-shaped box and a two-piece box.

The game got various awards and received high scores in most magazines and on most game sites (80-100%). Best of E3 award, Computer Game Review 1993, Adventure Game of the Year 1994, Computer Gaming World, Adventure Game of the year, Strategy Plus.

In 1997 a novelization of the story was publised called Sins of the Fathers: A Gabriel Knight Novel (published by Roc, pp. 416).

In October 2014 Pinkerton Road Studio (established by Jensen and Holmes) released a remake of the original game, called Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition (Windows and Macintosh versions; the next year Android and iPad versions were published).

In the same month Phoenix Online Publishing released a Gabriel Knight short story written by Jane Jensen, called "The Temptation". In December the first part of a three-part comic book version was published (followed by the second and third chapter in February and April 2015).
