Box concepts

The game was released on disks and CD-Rom. The disk version has voices only during cut scenes and a few key game play moments.

The game was released in 1993 for DOS, followed by a Macintosh version in 1996. It contains the original version of Maniac Mansion as an actual computer game inside the game. Besides a standard two-piece a special edition was released as a triangular box.

  Day of the Tentacle Remastered

An updated version of DOTT, called
Day of the Tentacle: Remastered, was published in 2016 by Double Fine Productions (founded by Tim Schafer).

Maniac Mansion is also a sitcom loosely based on the game. It was aired for three seasons (September 1990 - April 1993).

  Maniac Mansion Deluxe
A group called LucasFan Games released in 2004 a 256-color remake called "Maniac Mansion Deluxe".

Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick launched a Kickstarter for Thimbleweed Park in 2014, a game in the same vein as the Maniac Mansion games (such as multiple playable and selectable verbs). It was successfully funded and the game was released in 2017 (in the same year a thesis was published with DOTT as subject matter).11

LucasArts Singapore has been working on a remastered version that would be pseudo-3D with remade backgrounds and redone cut-scenes. 80% was done, but it was never approved or released.

Return of the Tentacle: Prologue

In 2018 a fan-made sequel was released, called "Return of the Tentacle: Prologue".

DOTT got numerous awards from Computer Gaming World, including Adventure Game of the Year (1994). Adventure Gamers included it as #1 on their 20 Greatest Adventure Games of All Time List. Some ratings in magazines: Joystick 91%, PC Joker 90/100, Génération 4 94%, Adventure Corner 5/5, Power Play 9/10 and rated it as "Best sequel in 1993".12
